I believe thats why Nylund wrote the book, aside from bungie telling him what to write about. The book is to help explain what is it come, and it also leaves room for readers to think. Like that "slipspace bubble" is what can save humanity, or any other possible assumptions. The book is telling side information so one can understand the whole halo world, as opposed to just knowing the little bit of the master cheifs side. And theres a reason for writing this book, it wouldnt have been written for no reason, it has to lead to something. I do however agree with alot of your feelings, escpecially..."....leaving the reader with a "Who the hell does this asshole think he is?" feeling." But I dont kurts death was a waste of time.
